Anganwadi workers call off agitation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers’ Union on Monday called off its 45-day-old agitation after Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy issued orders to keep GO 390 (on handing over four pilot projects to Care, an NGO, and a private organisation) “pending detailed examination of the petition submitted by the union”.

A press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said Dr. Reddy had already ordered keeping in abeyance two other contentious GOs 41 and 42, which were opposed by the union. The GO 41 provides for entrusting the ICDS works to gram panchayats and GO 42 extends government rules to the Anganwadi workers, including dismissal from service on even a trivial issue.

‘Vijayotsavam’

The Chief Minister issued orders keeping the GO 390 in abeyance after union leaders B. Lalithamma and P. Roja, who met him during the day. The union, which went ahead with the ‘Chalo Assembly’ rally in the morning to press its demands, said it was converted into a ‘vijayotsavam’ procession.
