CHENNAI: Work on the water distribution and sewerage network on the stretch of Rajiv Gandhi Salai from Madhya Kailash to Siruseri would be completed in three months.

Chennai Metrowater is involved in providing the infrastructure along the 20-km stretch, which is also known as IT Corridor. Metrowater officials said Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) provided the necessary space for the work on the road recently. As a result, the project work has accelerated on one side of the road. Bids have been invited from contractors to take up similar works on the other side of the road too.

While Metrowater would supply materials, including pipes, the contractor would have to engage labour.

The Rs.71 crore project that was launched in 2007 had been delayed on account of the time taken to right of way on the road for the work.

The official said though a tender for the water supply and sewerage network was finalised a year ago, it had to be foreclosed due to the delay. Fresh bids were invited recently.

The project demands co-ordination between various government agencies involved in providing different infrastructure facilities along the road.

The TNRDC had improved the 20-km stretch through a special purpose vehicle, IT Expressway Ltd, which also maintains the road.

A TNRDC official said that work on constructing stormwater drain and laying service ducts for telecom and electricity cables are in progress on one side of the road. Steps are under way to construct service lanes and footpaths, at an estimated cost of Rs.27 crore.

The infrastructure works by different agencies on the road would be completed by September.

Land acquisition in 13 villages for extending the road from Siruseri to Poonjeri, a distance of nearly 26 km, has also commenced.

Two bypasses would be provided in Kelambakkam and Thiruporur.

Kancheepuram district authorities would conduct meetings with regard to the land acquisition in three villages this month-end, the official added.
