The triumphant South Zone team poses with the Vizzy Trophy in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

HYDERABAD: South Zone emerged triumphant in the all-India Vizzy Trophy cricket championship with an emphatic 182-run win over North Zone on the concluding day of the four-day final here on Tuesday.

Resuming at its overnight score of 103 for eight, North Zone was all out for 146 in its second essay after 45 minutes of play in which 13.1 overs were bowled.

The first breakthrough on Tuesday morning was provided when medium-pacer R.D. Ashwin Kumar induced a big hit from the defiant Samar Quadri (31, 46 balls, 6 x 4) to deep mid-on where Kushal Jilla took a well-judged catch running backwards. The ninth-wicket partnership of 45 between Samar and Aslam Ansari had delayed the inevitable.

Ashwin also struck the final blow when he cleaned up Aslam Ansari (24, 116 balls, 2x4) with a sharp inswinger to which the batsman was clueless.

The victorious captain D.B. Ravi Teja attributed the success to team work.

“We gelled as a team better than any other outfit here. The eight-wicket match haul by Jagan Mohan was decisive in helping us to win the match,” the captain said.

Prof. P. C. Venudhar, Registrar of Osmania University, gave away the prizes.

The scores:

South Zone 284 & 222 bt North Zone 178 & 146 (Samar Qadri 31, Jagan Mohan Sai four for 50, R.D. Ashwin Kumar four for 33).
