Toys and children

Prof. Krishnakumar’s article on toys (Feb. 11) should make the toymakers of India and the killjoy heads of primary educational institutions sit up and take notice. While most playway schools play with kids’ future and most Montessori schools bring up children like caged birds, parents are in the dark not knowing whether they are getting their money’s worth. Some schools are roped in by unwanted gadget makers who issue clever advertisements to promote their wares. Our traditional festivals and games promoted creativity. These activities have been neglected for some time now in the name of gender bias. Parents too are helpless as most private managements have a strong clout and are bent on running schools like factories. In spite of this, our human potential is appreciated because of the sincere efforts of dedicated teachers, parents and special schools. There is an urgent need for revamping primary education.

G. Swaminathan,

Coimbatore

It is a matter of serious concern that we do not have a definitive policy and direction towards the holistic growth of our little angels. Prof. Krishna Kumar’s thought-provoking article will make a powerful impact on educators.

Sheojee Singh,

Chandigarh
