Sub-jail demolition begins
R. Rajaram
TIRUCHI: Work on converting the sub-jail at Nagapattinam into a district Jail has commenced with the Public Works Department demolishing the sub-jail.
The State Government had sanctioned Rs. 1.59 crore for the construction of the district jail to accommodate over 100 inmates, especially remand prisoners and undertrials.
The lone district jail in Tiruchi range is functioning in Pudukottai, accommodating around 170 prisoners. The inmates of the sub-jail have already been shifted to the sub-jails at Tranquebar, Mayiladuturai and Sirkazhi.
Prison authorities told The Hindu that the district jail would have dormitory accommodation instead of the cell type in the sub-jail. The district jail would have an interview room, a frisking room, a medical officer room and a room for storing dietary articles. It would have 10 blocks with attached toilets.
It would also have separate chambers for the Additional Superintendent of Prison, who would be in charge, and the Jailor.
