Murugan to be GTCC chairman

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Olympic Association will nominate K. Murugan, secretary general of the Volleyball Federation of India, as the chairman of the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) for the 35th National Games to be held in Kerala during May next year.

The nomination of Mr. Murugan to the post was indicated by the IOA president Suresh Kalmadi during his discussion on matters relating to the conduct of the Games with the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar here on Tuesday.

The IOA director, A.S.V. Prasad will be the convenor of the GTCC, which normally oversees the technical conduct of the competitions in the various disciplines.

Kalmadi’s promise

Mr. Kalmadi, it is also reliably learnt, has promised to favourably consider the inclusion of cycle polo as a medal event in the Games.

The promise was made prior to his departure on Wednesday to senior Kerala Olympic Association officials who had followed up the request made by Mr.Vijayakumar in this regard on Tuesday.

If included, the numbers of disciplines at the Games would go up to 36.

In the meanwhile, the State Cabinet, also on Wednesday, decided to turn down the request made by IAS officer, A. Jayathilak that he may be spared from taking up the post of Special Officer of the Games.

The former Kozhikode district collector had cited the clearance of the State and Union Governments to take up higher studies abroad from September this year while putting up his request a couple of days after he was named to the post last month.

Sources told The Hindu that it was the inability of the Government to zero in on a suitable officer that led to it turning down the request of Mr. Thilak.

Temporary

However, this would be only a temporary arrangement as the Government was keen to start work on the conduct of the Games at the earliest, as it was left with just a little over 14 months to meet the D-day of May 1 next year

17 sub-committees

The NGOC office is to be set up at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium here. The NGOC will receive support from 17 sub-committees for the smooth conduct of the Games.

All but one of these sub-committees will have a Minister as the chairman and a senior Government official as convenor.

It has been decided to limit the membership of each of these committees to 15 persons.

The lone sub-committee to be headed by an outsider, to be nominated by the IOA, will be the accreditation and protocol committee.
