‘Incidental catches’ up

Staff Reporter

Kochi: Despite the Wild life (Protection) Act of 1972, incidental capture of endangered marine organisms is on the rise. According to Wildlife Institute of India, trawlers land most of the protected species in comparison to gill-netters and seines. Gastropods, sea cucumbers, dolphins, turtles and sharks are the major groups of protected species that are obtained as by-catch.

“Fishermen say they are unable to prevent incidental catch. However, after being caught, the products are traded. Low success of awareness programmes coupled with rising market demand are said to be the major reasons for the persistence of this trade, which may be countered by alternate livelihood options and setting up of coast-based marine anti-poaching and trade monitoring centres that will report such incidents,” said scientists while presenting papers on this at the international.
