Action plan under implementation yielding good results, says Collector

Kakinada: Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi has called for concerted effort to mitigate water scarcity in Godavari delta.

Addressing the District Water Management Committee meeting here on Thursday, he asserted that the action plan currently under implementation was yielding good results, albeit slowly. He observed that more water would be needed after February 25, which necessitated immediate steps lest crops should wither away, especially in tail-end areas.

Mr. Dwivedi said out of 306 cross-bunds, 287 were already laid and oil was being supplied to engines for drawing water from drains.

Committees were constituted to monitor and regulate the release of water at respective places in order to streamline the overall supply.

He said that tail-end areas in 12 mandals were particularly facing problematic situation. Therefore, efforts should be made to find a feasible solution at the earliest. The ideal thing was to put the existing water resources to optimum use, he suggested.

District-level meet

The Collector said a district-level meeting would be organised on February 18 to discuss the emerging situation and called upon the Water Users’ Associations and distributory committees to contribute their mite to improve the scenario.

Superintending Engineer (Irrigation) KVLN Raju said rabi crops were under cultivation in 4,36,500 acres in the district and they required 40 tmcft of water, out of which 18 tmcft had already been supplied and utilised.

Efforts were on to increase the supply of water after February 25 and utilise water properly, he added.

Joint Collector K. Sasidhar, DRO M. Mohan Raju, Agriculture Joint Director T. Nandaiah and others participated.
