Students stage march to Cusat VC’s office

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Students from North Indian States on the Cochin University of Science and Technology campus boycotted classes on Thursday and staged a protest against the continuing attacks against them allegedly by a section of local students.

The students marched to the office of the Vice-Chancellor and demanded stringent action against the attacks on North Indian students staying in various hostels on the campus. The protest was an off-shoot of the recent attacks against them allegedly by a few Malayali students on the campus.

Students alleged that the accused had entered their hostel rooms and started beating up the inmates without any provocation. B.Tech students from North Indian States also pointed out that a section of the Malayali senior students had forcibly collected money from them besides torturing them mentally on several occasions.

They also referred to incidents where the seniors had snatched mobile phones and other valuables from them.

Students said that the authorities were yet to take action against students involved in such incidents. They had brought these issues before the Principal and authorities concerned but action was getting delayed, they said.
