Move to widen NH road into four-lane

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph has that the government has entrusted the Kerala Highway Research Insti- tute (KHRI) with the preparation of a project report for the development of the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila stretch of the national highway (NH) into a four-lane road.

Meeting held

The decision was taken at a high level meeting convened by the government to discuss the hazards and public inconvenience caused by the heavy traffic congestion along the road.

The KHRI has been asked to submit the project report within six months after detailed investigations.

It was also decided to convene a meeting of elected representatives and officials on February 26 to discuss the land acquisition, setback distance for new buildings, construction activities and mobilisation of funds.

Mr. Joseph said the Secretary, Public Works, had been directed to transfer Rs.25 lakh to KHRI for the project investigation.

Priority project

He said the development of the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila road would be taken up as a priority project.

The Minister said Pannian Ravindran, MP, and MLAs V.J. Thankappan and N. Sakthan had appealed to the government to implement the project in view of the traffic problems and the importance of the road as a link in the inter-State corridor.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu, MLAs R. Selvaraj and George Mercier, chairman of the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority C. Ajaya Kumar, Principal Secretary, Public Works, Tom Jose and District Collector Sanjay Kaul participated in the meeting.
