Kalasalingam University reaches out to hearing impaired Mauritian students

S. Sundar

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Government of Mauritius has agreed to work with Kalasalingam Univeristy at Krishnankoil near here for providing a six-year integrated B. Tech. programme to its students with speech and hearing impairment.

An appeal had been made to the university to provide training to school teachers from Mauritius on the approach and technology adopted by the varsity in teaching the special students, Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangaraj, told reporters here on Friday.

A delegation from the university, led by its Pro-chancellor, K. Sridharan, visited Mauritius last week on invitation from the Association of Parents of Children with Hearing Impaired to explore the opportunities in educating their children on its campus.

Collaboration with Mauritius

“We wanted to invite the special students alone. But Mauritius Education Minister, Vasanth Banwaree, asked us to accommodate normal children too so as to facilitate some comfort for the special children for the Speech and Hearing Impaired Programme (SHIP),” Dr. Thangaraj said. Stating that out of around 15,000 students who went abroad for studies from Mauritius, at least 2,000 were coming to India, the Vice-Chancellor said, “Initially, we hope to attract at least 100 students,” he said.

The Government of Mauritius that had been providing scholarships to its students to study only in Government or Government-aided institutions abroad had promised to give scholarships to 25 per cent of the students getting admitted in SHIP. On its part, the university had come forward to provide a 30 per cent scholarship on the annual fees to the students of Mauritius.

The Minister also wanted Kalasalingam University to collaborate with the University of Technology, Mauritius, in designing some of the courses, before setting up its campus in Mauritius.
