Delhi Transco to construct sub-station in record time

Staff Reporter

Ready for commissioning by February 2010

The sub-station will be fully automated

NEW DELHI: Delhi Transco Limited, now constructing a new 400/220/66-kV grid power sub-station at Mundka here, is hopeful of setting a new record by completing the construction within 18 months instead of the usual 24. While general work at the site has begun, civil construction work will start after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit lays the foundation stone this Saturday.

“The sub-station will be ready for commissioning by February 2010. This is also the first sub-station that Delhi Transco will be constructing without any consultancy from Power Grid or NTPC. Everything from planning to engineering is being handled by Delhi Transco itself,” say Power Department sources.

The sub-station will initially have two transformers on the 400, 200 and 66 kV-grids, and the number will later be increased to three. “There will be two transformers of 315 MVA on the 400 kV grid and the 220 kV grid and two of 160 MVA on the 66 kV grid. The 400 kV grid will be used to provide power to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s Mundka line and the Nangloi water works,” say sources.

The sub-station will be fully automated and provide additional supply to West Delhi. “With the commissioning of this Rs.196-crore sub-station, the total number of power sub-stations in Delhi will increase to four. The Mundka sub-station will also have a provision which will allow us to bring in power from the 1,500-MW power plant now coming up at Jhajjar in Haryana,” sources said.

The Mundka sub-station will also be used as a support for the Bawana and Bamnauli sub-stations, which means in case of a breakdown of either, this sub-station will serve the areas fed by them.
