Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The Thennindhiya Nugarvor Paadhukaapu Sangam has said that the announcement by the Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in the interim budget to reduce second class and sleeper class fares of all mail / express and ordinary trains by two per cent as well as the decision to reduce fares of AC classes by two percent was a boon to the travelling public.

The Sangam’s general secretary M. Uma, in a statement, welcomed the announcement of introduction of 43 new trains in 2009-10 besides the decision to examine the feasibility of running bullet trains in different sections.

In another release, the coordinator of Tamil Nadu Makkal Nala Iyakkangalin Kootamaippu, Tiruchi N. Ramakrishnan complimented Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav for raising the revenue of the railways and taking it in the path of development.

He said important projects such as the Mayiladuthurai – Villupuram broad gauge conversion and Karur – Salem new line were facing inordinate delay in execution. All political parties, service and consumer organisations should join hands to ensure that the schemes were expedited.

Barring the extension of trains Ernakulam – Nagore and Bangalore – Coimbatore which are welcome, there is nothing much for Tamil Nadu either in surveys, or in gauge conversion or in doubling or in introduction of new trains, said S. Pushpavanam, secretary, Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, Tiruchi.

In a statement here, he said the most expected Chennai- Tiruchi additional train had not been given.

The cash surplus of Rs.25,000 crore had been generated at the expense of fair deal to the consumers, he said adding that at least five per cent reduction in fare should have been made to do justice to the travelling public.

The Railway Minister has tabled a public friendly budget by announcing various new trains and extending some, the convenor of Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations M. Sekaran said in a statement.

While welcoming the cut in fares, he said the long pending demands to introduce new trains to Bangalore from Tiruchi; restoration of Tirupathi Express, Ahmedabad Express and Tiruchi - Mangalore Express were yet to be considered.

The railway administration should expedite the gauge conversion work from Mayiladuthurai to Villupuram, which has been prolonging, besides restoring the Rock Fort Express to start from Tiruchi, he said.
