For a cause: Lawyers and social activists began a signature campaign in Salem on Friday to urge the Central government to stop auctioning the spectacles, watch and footwear which Gandhiji wore in London. —
SALEM: Making a passionate appeal that the Mahatma should not be commercialized, a group of Salem citizens, led by lawyers, social activists and Gandhians, has embarked on a noble campaign of collecting ‘one-lakh’ signatures, seeking immediate Presidential intervention to stop the precious belongings of the ‘Father of Nation’ going under the hammer in New York next month.
These invaluable possessions of Mahatma Gandhi, which will be auctioned perhaps on March 4 and 5 in New York, as per reports, include his unique round-rimmed spectacles, a pocket watch attached to a chain and a pair of footwear.
A few utensils he used would also be brought under the hammer, it is reported.
“They are precious and belong to us. They are an inherent part of his Satyagraha and Ahimsa and hence the country’s freedom struggle,” said A. Moorthy, Additional Public Prosecutor, who is leading the important campaign from this part of the State.
The group after collecting the required signatures has decided to send them to the President Pratibha Patil, asking her to initiate immediate action against the auction.
They also insist that these articles should be handed over to the Indian Government, which has the moral right to possess them.
They also have decided to further intensify the campaign.
