It is a populist budget, says Jayalalithaa
Special Correspondent
Jayalalithaa
CHENNAI: The interim railway budget is a populist one, keeping an eye on the Lok Sabha elections and it is hard to find any winds of change in it, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said on Friday.
In a statement here, she said while loudly proclaiming that Indian Railways had generated cash to the tune of Rs.90,000 crore in the last five years, it was disappointing to note that no sincere effort had been made to transfer the benefit of the so-called achievements to the weaker sections of society.
“Considering the huge profit made by Indian Railways and taking into account the cut in the diesel prices, the fare cuts announced are only marginal. It is disappointing to note that the freight rate will remain unchanged,” she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa alleged that no serious steps had been taken to strengthen and modernise security arrangements in Indian Railways though the year 2008 witnessed a series of bomb blasts.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said although the budget last year made provision for adding new trains, new lines, and gauge conversion projects in Tamil Nadu, nothing had been achieved.
“Almost all the announcements have been only paper projects, ritually repeated,” she alleged.
“Further, the Velachery-St. Thomas Mount railway line is unfortunately in the incubation stage for the past so many years. This long delay is quite unacceptable,” she added.
