COIMBATORE: Activities taken up by women through self-help groups help them achieve economic independence to meet at least some of their needs, according to Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry. He gave away assistance to members of women self-help groups, laid foundation and inaugurated projects worth Rs. 147 crore at a function held here on Saturday. The Minister said Tamil Nadu had 3.69 lakh self-help groups with 59 lakh members. In Coimbatore district, there were 28,000 groups. In Western countries, women enjoyed equal rights as men. It was important for women to give up inferiority complex. They should be economically self-sufficient to meet part of their needs at least and not approach money lenders. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi started the self-help groups in 1989 in Dharmapuri district. He had introduced several welfare programmes for women’s development. The Minister added that because of several schemes of the government prices were under control in the State. Tamil Nadu also attracted huge industrial investments during the last three years.
