Women throng exhibition to get maternity assistance

For their turn: Women thronging the stall of Health Department to get tokens to receive maternity assistance at Bharat Nirman Exhibition in Krishnagiri on Saturday.

KRISHNAGIRI: A near stampede-like situation prevailed at Bharat Nirman Exhibition in Krishnagiri on Saturday when over 300 women with babies and pregnant women thronged the stall of the Health Department to receive maternity assistance.

Employees issued tokens to the beneficiaries at a stall put up at the entrance. They were given cheques at another stall inside the venue.

As there was no one to regulate the crowd, some women with babies fell on one another.

On information, A. Ganesan, Deputy Director (Health Services), came to the stall and asked the staff to regulate the crowd and issue the cheques.

Mr. Ganesan told The Hindu that the medical officers and the village health nurses concerned later issued the cheques to the women.

He said during the current financial year Rs. 6.50 crore was distributed to 10,800 women under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme.

As part of the Health Department’s initiative to strengthen the bond between rural people and the officials, ‘Valaikappu’ was performed to 50 pregnant women at the exhibition. Gifts were also given to them. Cultural programmes were performed by NGOs and volunteers of UNICEF at the exhibition.
