A Social Welfare Department official has also been arrested Two executive engineers arrested on charges of introducing false names in muster rolls NEW DELHI: Eight serving and two retired officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government for alleged involvement in embezzlement of official funds. A Social Welfare Department official has also been arrested. Jagbir Singh, a junior engineer with the MCD, has been arrested on charges of allowing illegal constructions on over a dozen properties falling under his jurisdiction at Karol Bagh in Central Delhi. It is alleged that despite public complaints to the MCD control room about some of the illegal constructions, no action was taken by the engineer. When asked by the monitoring committee, the accused claimed that there had been no illegal constructions. In another case that was registered about five years ago, the ACB has arrested retired Sanitary Superintendent Baldev Prasad Sharma and retired Chief Sanitary Inspector Heera Lal Gupta for allegedly introducing names in the muster rolls by forging signatures and thumb impressions to inflate the number of workers and siphon off money from the Exchequer. Four officials have already been arrested in that case. Executive engineers Satish Kataria and Harpal Singh, assistant engineers S. C. Jain, Tara Chand and Chandan Singh and junior engineers Om Singh and S. R. Meena were arrested on similar charges of introducing false names in the muster rolls to swindle money. In another case, the Anti-Corruption Branch arrested R. K. Sharma of the Social Welfare Department for alleged fictitious purchase of articles for Bal Sadan at Timarpur during 2005-06 by forging documents. The official was earlier arrested in another case. A suspended superintendent and a district officer were earlier arrested in the Bal Sadan case.
