GUWAHATI: Dada Saheb Phalke award winner and music maestro Bhupen Hazarika unveiled his life-size statue on the banks of the Dighaliphukuhuri tank along the busy GNB Road here on Saturday.

The statue has been installed by the All-Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in recognition of the contribution made by the internationally-famed ballad singer.

A first in the northeast

This is the first time that anyone in the northeast has unveiled his statue in his lifetime.

Dr. Hazarika was escorted from his Nizarapar residence here in a colourful procession led by six decorated elephants.

Young boys and girls in traditional attire and school students in uniform lined up the entire route to greet him by showering flower petals and humming his popular numbers.

All-Assam Students’ Union leaders Samujal Kumar Bhattacharyya, Sankar Prasad Rai and Tapan Kumar Gogoi escorted him from his residence to the venue.

The statue made of fibreglass material has been built by noted Assamese sculptor Biren Singha.

Dr. Hazarika while addressing the crowd after unveiling his statue said that he was overwhelmed by the love and respect bestowed on him by the people of Assam.

He also hummed a few lines of some of his popular numbers.

Tribute

AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattcharyya said that the student body decided to install the statue of the noted singer during his lifetime to pay tribute to the maestro for his immense contribution in enriching Assam’s culture and heritage and making it popular in the national and international spheres through music.

Public felicitation

The All-Assam Students’ Union also organised a public felicitation for the music maestro at Latasil playground here on Sunday.
