Thomas Kurien falls to Anand Pawar

INDORE: Kerala’s Thomas Kurien went down fighting to fourth seed Anand Pawar of Air India in an exciting second round men’s singles match in the National badminton championship at the Abhey Prashal stadium here on Saturday.

Initially he looked like causing the first big upset of the championship with his delicate but rapier-like sharp touches of the shuttle, something Pawar in his first outing never bargained for.

The action, which began after a formal inauguration ceremony in the morning, suddenly livened up thanks to the two players. If Pawar managed to grab the first game, he was clueless in the second but managed a handy lead in the third to push the fighting rival out.

Earlier, top seeds Arvind Bhat of Petroleum in the men’s section and Maharashtra’s Neha Pandit in the women’s section, who were given a bye into the second round, sailed through comfortably.

Abantika out

For the record, the one upset of the day came late with the exit of Assam’s Abantika Deka after the knee injury she was carrying threatened to flare up. Trailing by a game and 7-14 in the second, she conceded the second round match to Air India’s Anuradha Shirkhande.
