JAIPUR: The Global Network for Sustained Elimination of Iodine Deficiency will be holding its board meeting here on February 19 and 20. The international coalition working for better coordination for removal of iodine deficiency and protection of the newborns will review its progress and make observations vis-À-vis the Indian situation at the two-day meeting. Formally launched on May 8, 2002 at the U.N. Special Session for Children, the collaborative network functions through the resources of a number of global bodies, such as UNICEF, World Health Organisation, Micronutrient Initiative and the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders. In addition to the board members, the Central Government’s Salt Commissioner and members of the Iodine Network’s constituent bodies are expected to take part in the meeting. The network will be meeting in Jaipur for the first time to discuss iodine deficiency disorder that affects people worldwide. The board will reiterate its commitment to assist all the countries in achieving the goal of sustained elimination of iodine deficiency disorder primarily through universal salt iodisation and also formulate plans for the years to come. The board members will also undertake a field visit to Nawa town near the historic Sambhar lake in Nagaur district on February 21 to witness a unique model of salt iodisation launched by small salt producers and self-help groups which have formed an apex cooperative body to develop market linkages.
