COMMENDATION: Villupuram Collector R. Palanisamy giving away a prize to a winner of the competition held in connection with the Pongal Tourism Festival-2009 at Ginjee on Saturday.

VILLUPURAM: The district administration along with the Tourism Department organised a ‘Pongal Tourism Festival-2009’ at the Ginjee Fort near here on Saturday.

Collector R. Palanisamy said that tourism helped to improve economy and strengthened cultural bond. The festival, scheduled to be held during Pongal festival, was postponed owing to administrative reasons.

Mr. Palanisamy said that visiting tourist spots was an exciting experience and it always created a lasting impression on the tourists. One might read any amount of literature about a place but a single trip to that place would certainly be rewarding.

The Ginjee Fort was of historical importance where Raja Desing, known for his valour and compassion, ruled. Efforts would be made to make the fort a major tourist attraction, Mr. Palanisamy said. Students of Villupuram Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Sarada Matriculation School and St Michael’s Matriculation School staged cultural programmes at the festival.

Music school students and folk artists enthralled the audience. Mr. Palanisamy gave away prizes to winners of various competitions conducted in connection with the event. He also gave away identity cards to members of welfare boards set up for narikoravas, autorickshaw drivers, domestic workers, barbers and rag-pickers. He also disbursed financial aid of Rs. 1,000 each to five members.

MLAs V. Kannan and P. Senthamil Selvan, district panchayat chairperson V.S. Vasundaradevi, and Ginjee town panchayat chairman Ginjee Masthan were present.
