TIRUCHI: Having launched the 100 per cent Literacy Scheme (Nootrukku Nooru Kalvi Thittam) in all Central Prisons and other jails in the State recently, the Prisons Department in association with the State Resource Centre for Adult and Continuing Education has planned to organise an orientation programme for resource persons for effective implementation of this new initiative. Senior officials from the State Resource Centre for Adult and Continuing Educationwill conduct the programme for Sub Jail Warders, Welfare Officers and ‘Prisoner Teachers’ in all the nine Central Prisons, Borstal School, Pudukottai and the Special Prison for Women at Puzhal, Vellore and Tiruchi on February 18. During the one-day programme, the officials would enlighten the resource persons on various aspects related to literacy and continuing education. It has been arranged on the initiative of the Director General of Police (Prisons) R. Nataraj. The State Resource Centre had come out with a Rapid Literacy Primer in Tamil, a teaching learning material running to about 80 pages, for easy understanding of the illiterate prisoners. The material would be supplied free of cost. The Superintendent of Prison, Central Prison, Tiruchi A. Murugesan said about 30 Sub Jail Warders and ‘Prisoner Teachers’ both from the Central Prison and Special Prison for Women, Tiruchi would attend the programme which would be held inside the Central Prison premises here.
