Letters to the Editor
In the election year, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has presented the interim Railway budget with utmost care and safety to create a good impression in the minds of voters. He has reduced the tariff on the tickets for all sections of travellers. But it is another disappointing budget for Kerala. No new projects, surveys, electrification or double lining have been proposed. The State definitely deserves better. N.V. Subramania Iyer, Kollam Is Kerala not part of India? What has Kerala done to deserve this? These are the questions that come to mind when one takes a look at the interim railway budget. Longstanding issues like doubling of tracks and electrification have been ignored. New trains promised in the last budget are yet to start operating. C.M. Umanath, Kozhikode Mr. Prasad has proved yet again that he is the master of presenting budgets. As the cartoon (Feb. 14) has aptly portrayed, the Congress-led UPA needs his support to win the next general election. By promising to retain him as Railway Minister, it can certainly win more votes. M. Syed Ahmed, Tuticorin We do not need bullet trains but normal trains that are faster, safer and cleaner. We need a properly designed platform track bed in major stations that can be easily maintained, given that people’s habits cannot be changed. On the vision front, we need to add rolling stock quickly and in huge numbers. M. Balakrishnan, Hyderabad
