THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) spokesperson M. M. Hassan said here on Sunday that the CPI(M) Polit Bureau’s reiteration of its stand that the SNC Lavalin case was politically motivated showed that it too was responsible for the ‘corrupt’ deal. Addressing a news conference here, Mr. Hassan said CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat’s statements about the SNC Lavalin deal was an admission that the deal was something endorsed by the CPI(M) central committee. However, simply because the deal had been endorsed by the central committee, the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India and the Assembly committee would not become null and void, he said. Mr. Hassan said Mr. Karat’s statement that the Lavalin agreement was signed with the concurrence of the CPI(M) State secretariat suggested that though his party did not approve of corruption by individuals, it had nothing against the party indulging in corruption. As a party, the CPI(M) was fully immersed in corruption and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s stand against corruption was nothing but a ‘hoax.’ Apparently, he wanted to both fight against corruption and cling on to his position as Chief Minister. He latched on to the Lavalin case only when it became clear that he would be removed as Chief Minister after the Lok Sabha elections, he said. Mr. Hassan said the Congress would launch a strong agitation if there was any delay or legal hurdle in granting clearance for prosecution of CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and others in the Lavalin case. The CPI(M) would not be able to escape blame by alleging political motivation behind the case. The attempts of the CPI(M) to delay prosecution in the case was a threat to rule of law. Mr. Vijayan would not be able to wriggle out of the list of accused in the Lavalin case by holding the ‘Navakerala March’ or by organising huge demonstrations, the Congress leader said.
