TIRUCHI: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned Rs.50 crore for developing the Kumbakonam-Mannargudi section of the National Highway 45C, Union Minister for Shipping, Highways and Road Transport T. R. Baalu said here on Sunday.

Speaking after declaring open the 31-km segment between Valikandapuram and Padalur forming part of the four-laning project of Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway, Mr. Baalu said that the Kumbakonam-Mannargudi section with a number of curves was accident-prone.

On the Valikandapuram–Padalur segment developed at an estimate of Rs. 230 crore, Mr. Baalu said that the section included two pedestrian underpasses at Valikandapuram and Padalur, ensuring safety of the persons crossing the highway; seven minor bridges, 29 box culverts and 13 pipe culverts. Service roads have been provided on both sides.

The salient feature of the project was the inclusion of two grade separators at a couple of major road crossings – one 900 metres long at the Perambalur Four Road Junction and another at the Perambalur Three Road Junction of 680 metres length. Six-lane configuration has been provided for the entire 2.20 km road between the two grade separators.

Responding to a plea from Perambalur MLA M. Rajkumar for the construction of a sub-way or under-pass bridge at Siruvachur in the wake of frequent accidents in the area after the execution of the four-lane project, Mr. Baalu said that the NHAI had taken up special efforts for ensuring safety of the pedestrians and other local road-users.

He appealed to District Superintendent of Police M. Vanitha and Collector Anil Meshram to sensitise the masses, especially students, on road safety rules, as part of prevention of road accidents.

Mr. Baalu said that the nation could register a steep growth up to 8.6 per cent in GDP, thanks to the development of infrastructure, particularly the road sector.

One India Plan

Union Minister of Information Technology and Communications A. Raja said that the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited would soon introduce a ‘One India Plan’ with a tariff as low as 0.50 paise and launch 3G services in Tamil Nadu shortly.
