Satellite mapping of wakf properties

Special Correspondent

Hyderabad: The Government of India has agreed to set up a National Wakf Development Authority for development and monitoring of the wakf properties in the country. This follows the recommendations made by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Wakf institutions, said K. Rahman Khan, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha.

He told presspersons here on Sunday that it was decided to digitalise information about wakf properties in the country. A sum of Rs. 25 crore would be spent on development of a software. Besides satellite mapping of wakf properties was being taken up by the NIC. At present there was no authentic record of wakf properties.

Mr. Rahman, who heads the joint parliamentary committee on wakf, said a massive investment of Rs. 1,000 crore per annum was required to develop the wakf properties in the country.

This amount could be raised through institutional mechanism. The parliamentary committee had also suggested strengthening of Wakf Act and giving more powers to the CEOs of Wakf Boards by posting higher ranking officials.
