S.M. Abdul Majid TIRUNELVELI: Former Local Administration Minister S.M. Abdul Majid, who found a place in the ministry of late K. Kamaraj, died in Chennai on Sunday. He was 85. He is survived by four sons and two daughters. The end came this morning when he, who hailed from Kadayanallur in the district, had gone to visit his relatives at Ayanavaram in Chennai. The body is being taken to his native place for last rites. Whenever they drink a glass of water, residents living under Kadayanallur municipality will certainly remember the sincere efforts taken by late Abdul Majid towards quenching their thirst. Since Kadayanallur is situated close to the Western Ghats, birthplace for good number of rivers, he designed a drinking water scheme, christened Kadayanallur Combined Drinking Water Scheme or Periyar Basin Drinking Water Scheme, which quenches the thirst of over a lakh population even now. He also played a pivotal role in the construction of Karuppanadhi dam, providing succour to a few thousands of hectares of agricultural lands in the Kadayanallur region. Karunanidhi’s condolenceChennai Special Correspondent writes: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi expressed his condolences to the family of Mr.Majid. Congress leaders also sent their condolences, including Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation G. K. Vasan, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu and Congress Legislature Party leader D. Sudarssanam.
