TIRUCHI: Two Primary Health Centres (PHC), at Thachankurichi and Sirumayankudi near Lalgudi, were declared open by the Transport Minister K.N. Nehru on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Nehru said the third new PHC sanctioned for the Lalgudi union at Kallakudi would be opened soon. Residents of the villages could also make use of the 108 free ambulance service round the clock, he said. The free health insurance scheme announced by the Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi at an outlay of Rs.1000 crores would come as a big boon to the poorer sections, Mr.Nehru said and added that over one crore people would benefit from the scheme in the State. He also appealed to the people to utilise the welfare schemes being implemented through the welfare boards for various sectors constituted by the government. At least Rs.20 lakhs was being spent to improve basic amenities in each village under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam. Collector T.Soundiah said three of the four PHCs sanctioned for the district recently would be in the Lalgudi Assembly segment. Mr.Nehru distributed free television sets to 777 beneficiaries at Thachankurichi and to 750 families at Sathamangalam, where he also declared open a new rural library building, an additional school building and an overhead water tank.
