Eto’o helps Barca earn a point

MADRID: Samuel Eto’o scored twice as leader Barcelona came from two goals down to preserve its 22-match unbeaten league run with a 2-2 draw at Real Betis on Saturday.

The result gives champion Real Madrid, currently 13 points behind in second, a chance to cut the gap at the top to 10 points when it faces Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

Juan Melli and former Liverpool man Mark Gonzalez put Betis into a 2-0 lead after just 25 minutes as Barcelona looked set for its first defeat since the opening day of the season.

Eto’o pulled a goal back close to half-time and then equalised six minutes from the end for his 23rd goal of the season but Barcelona’s run of 10 straight league wins still came to an end.

Saturday’s results:

La Liga: Deportivo La Coruna 0 drew with Osasuna 0; Real Betis 2 (Melli 18, Gonzalez 25) drew with Barcelona 2 (Eto’o 45, 84); Valencia 1 (Villa 53) drew with Malaga 1 (Albiol 59-og).

Serie A: Lazio 1 (Siviglia 75) drew with Torino 1 (Abate 36); Napoli 1 (Maggio 20) drew with Bologna 1 (Di Vaio 23). — Agencies

Corrections and Clarifications

The second paragraph of a third football report "Eto'o helps Barca earn a point" ("Sport", February 16, 2009) said "The result gives champion Real Madrid, currently 13 points behind in second, a chance to cut the gap at the top to 10 points when it faces Sporting Gijon on Sunday." Real Madrid were 12 points behind.
