Phogat upsets Fariz

KOLKATA: Unseeded Yogesh Phogat of Haryana beat sixth seeded Mohammad Fariz of Tamil Nadu in the lone upset in the men’s first round of the AITA Open grasscourt tennis organised by Central Excise here on Monday.

The other seeded players including top seeded P.C. Vignesh (Andhra Pradesh), second seeded Yannick Nelord (Delhi) and third seeded N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth of Tamil Nadu sailed into the pre-quarterfinals.

In the women’s section unseeded Shruti Dhawan made a successful comeback to the circuit by blowing away fourth seed Nupur Kaul of Maharshtra in straight sets.

In another upset G.K. Shweta of Maharashtra ousted the fifth seed Rani Smita Jain of Indian Air Force.

Among the fancied names top seeded Shivika Burman (Bengal), second seeded Treta Bhattacharyya (Bengal) and third seeded Asha Nandakumar of Karnataka won their matches easily before moving on to the next round.
