A programme on Bharathanatyam was held at Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls Higher Secondary School in Tuticorin on Friday. The show presented by Janaki Rangarajan impressed the audience. Janaki, a multi-faceted personality, had the honour of receiving the prestigious Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari Award of the Naradana Gana Sabha from the renowned dancer, Vyjayanthimala Bali and was selected as a graded artist for Doordarshan. Janaki is also an empanelled artiste of the Indian Cou ncil for Cultural Relations. D. Ganesan, president of the school, coordinated the programme. Lakshmi Praba Vikraman, trustee member, honoured the artiste with a shawl. Vanaja Rajagopalan, trustee member, appreciated her performance. Pappusundari, Headmistress and S. Selvaraj, advisor to Annamal College of Education for Women, were present. Students excelTen students of Muslim High School, Vadakarai, Tirunelveli district, have passed the National Talent Search Examination. These students – S. Mohamed Ismail, K. Sheik Mohamed Thanseer, S. Kathiresan, K. Mani Kandan, M. Selvam, S. Mahmuthal Begum, A. Mushina Parveen, M. Kathijal Beevi, S. Nazreen and A. Subaithal Nisha – will become eligible for scholarship every month, up to their higher studies. Yoga demonstrationThe 20th Annual Day of Punitha Ohm Convent Matriculation School, Kovilpatti, was celebrated with cultural programmes and yoga demonstration by students. Jebakaran, Superintendent, Customs, Tiruchendur, presided. Lakshmana Perumal, correspondent, welcomed the gathering. The Vice-Principal, Wiselin Lilly, presented the annual report. Deivendran, Nagarajan, Seenivasan and Tamilarasan, Municipal Councillors, distributed the prizes. Thiruvalluvar Mandram presiden t, Karuthapandi, and secretary, Seenivasan, offered felicitations. Akiladevi, Principal, proposed a vote of thanks. Tuticorin school tops in skatingStudents of Kamak Nursery and Primary School, Tuticorin, won the first three places in the skating competition held at Tirunelveli by Swami Vivekanda Yoga and Skating Association. Students from different schools participated in the competition. The valedictory function of L.S.M.S. Club of the school was conducted recently. The Headmistress, Uma Rani, presided. Mohammed Ali welcomed the gathering. Tamil and English skits were performed by students of standard II and III. The students of standard IV explained the water cycle. A quiz on mathematics was conducted. Sivaramakrishnan spoke about Mother Teresa. Pavitha proposed a vote of thanks. Girl wins badminton championshipC. Nisha Alex Priya, a ninth standard student of Kamak Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin, has won the junior championship in badminton at the district level competitions by winning the singles and doubles. She has also secured the sixth place in the tournament organised by the School Games Federation for selection of State team at Arakonam. Nisha stood third in the State-level tournament conducted by Dindigul Shuttle Badminton Association. Senthil Kani, Prin cipal, gave away prizes and certificates to Nisha in the assembly. Contests heldCompetitions in skating, yoga, karate, music, dance, spoken English and computer science were organised for student of BMC Group of Schools, Tuticorin, recently. The winners were awarded with prizes. Headmistress Auxilia Chandran presided. Skills in silambam displayedGanapathy Rakesh, a tenth standard student, of BMC School, won gold and silver medals in State-level swimming competition held at Nagercoil. Catherine of standard VIII won a bronze medal. ‘Silambam,’ a traditional sport, is part of the curriculum in Sree Subbiah Ambalam Matriculation HSS, Karaikudi. Students, who have been learning the art of ‘silambam,’ displayed their skills at the ‘Vallal Alagappa centenary celebrations’ held recently by National Catering College. (Compiled by J.
