In one voice: Women staging a demonstration in Salem on Monday. — SALEM: Saying that owning a house is an essential part of livelihood, members of Women’s Front staged a demonstration here on Monday demanding free house site ‘pattas’ for poor women. The members said that United Nations had pointed out that women without a house to dwell had been facing many hardships. A house, they said, should not be construed as a commodity but instead had to be treated as a place of safety and dignity for women. They said that the State should ensure the right of dwelling to all and particularly to poor women. The women also pointed out that a decent dwelling place would prevent many forms of violence against women. Many women also got displaced due to various development schemes. Hence, they insisted that the State should ensure the right of all to have dwellings. M. Shanthi and A. Aruljothi led the agitation. They also submitted a petition to the District Collector.
