THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government High School, Kaladay that initiated a series of activities relating to arts and culture during the previous academic year has emerged as the best school at the district level. The school will now compete at the forthcoming zonal competitions in Alappuzha on Friday along with 10 other selected schools from the district. The Kalady School was one among the several educational institutions adopted by the State government for special attention owing to its poor pass percentage. The year-long initiatives at the school started with a film ‘Lotus,’ made by the children of the school. The film was screened at the State Educational Film Festival organised by the State Institute for Education and Training last year. ‘Gift of God,’ another film with a message of changing the attitude of society towards patients having certain diseases came next. The script for the film was selected from a list of stories written by the students. The entire production unit, including the cameraman, camera assistants, art directors, makeup man, costume designer and light boys, were provided by Kalady Jayan, cine artist and an alumnus of the school. The film utilises almost all the students of the school. The school is now busy coming up with an anti-war music album. The songs, six in total, have been selected from an anti-war lyric writing competition held in August last to commemorate the Nagasaki and Hiroshima day. The lyrics written by Shankar R.G., Amrith K.S., Suresh R.S., Aishwarya Raj N.R., Ashwathy A.S. and Vipin Kumar, students of the school has been set to music by K. Surendran. However, a lack of sufficient monetary support has delayed the launch of the album. The album is expected to cost Rs 15,000. “We hope to release it in the current academic year,” said K. Sobhanakumari, headmistress.
