Corrections and clarifications

* * A report “Karunanidhi lauds Mukherjee” (Tamil Nadu, February 17, 2009) referred to Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, twice, as the Union Finance Minister. We repeat the correction issued in this column on January 31, 2009 — Mr. Mukherjee is the Union Minister of External Affairs (now with additional charge of Finance in the absence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh).

* * A sentence in the ninth paragraph of a report “‘The road ahead is going to be rocky’” (Op-Ed, February 17, 2009) was “So for the next 24 hours I let myself be swept along with the collective euphoria, and eventually, somewhere after Dick Warren’s creepy sermon, but before Aretha Franklin (and her hat) sang a note ….something momentous.” It should have been Rick Warren. (Richard Duane “Rick” Warren is an American evangelical minister and author.)

* * In “Corrections and Clarifications” (February 17, 2009), we had said that the expansion of NTPC is the National Thermal Power Corporation. The company says: “To safeguard its competitive advantage in the power generation business, NTPC has moved ahead in diversifying its portfolio to emerge as an integrated power major, with a presence across an entire energy value chain. In fact, to symbolise this change, NTPC has taken on a new identity and a new name NTPC Limited’.”

* * In connection with an IANS report “Flying high in the mighty MiG-35” (February 16, 2009), Ms. Suman Sharma clarifies: “This is to bring to your notice some clarifications about the story on my MiG-35 flight. Some of the facts have been incorrectly reported and misrepresented by the agency reporter. Information which was never given by me has been reported. It has been mentioned that I am a qualified pilot with a stint in the Indian Air Force (IAF) as a commissioned officer and currently a flying instructor with the Indian Military Academy (IMA). I am not a commissioned officer with the IAF (I never was) and currently not with the IMA. I was a passenger in the US-bound Boeing 737 commercial aircraft like everybody else, and not its pilot/co-pilot. Neither have I piloted or co-piloted IAF transport planes ever. I have just flown in them as a passenger. I have co-piloted these fighter jets (the F-16 and the MiG-35) in Bangalore for the first time. I categorically told the reporter that I am a Delhi-based journalist and a former academic instructor (not flight instructor — there is no flying taught at the IMA) from the IMA.” (The report was on Ms. Sharma becoming the world’s first woman to fly the Russian MiG-35 fighter, at the Aero India 2009 air show.)

Women fighter pilots are not yet permitted in the IAF.

* * A football report “Sporting Clube beats Churchill” (“Sport”, February 16, 2009) said “The victory puts Sporting on top of the table with 31 points from 15 matches.” A second report, “Another win for Mohun Bagan” (“Sport”, February 16, 2009), said “Mohun Bagan posted its 10th straight win to consolidate its position on top of the ONGC I-League table, with 33 points from 15 matches.” The detail “33 points” is right.

* * The second paragraph of a third football report “Eto’o helps Barca earn a point” (“Sport”, February 16, 2009) said “The result gives champion Real Madrid, currently 13 points behind in second, a chance to cut the gap at the top to 10 points when it faces Sporting Gijon on Sunday.” Real Madrid were 12 points behind.
