Tender for viaduct for Metro Rail finalised

It will connect Koyambedu with Ashok Nagar

Geriatrics Research Centre at K.K. Nagar coming


CHENNAI: A tender for the construction of a viaduct from Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar as part of the Chennai Metro Rail project has been finalised.

The foundation stone would soon be laid by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Presenting the State Budget for 2009-10 on Tuesday, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said detailed survey for linking Tiruvottiyur under the project would be taken up shortly. Of the State government’s allocation of Rs.3,034 crore, a provision of about Rs.600 crore has been made in the budget.

Work on improvement of micro and macro drains in the city, a Rs. 1,448-crore project sanctioned under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to alleviate flooding, would commence in 2009-10, he said.

The National Centre for Geriatrics Research, which would treat elderly patients and undertake research pertaining to old age ailments, would be established at K.K. Nagar. The project would be taken up at a cost of Rs.112 crore with Union Government assistance.

Of the Rs. 53 crore sanctioned for the purchase of equipment for government hospitals across the State, Rs.9 crore is towards procuring equipment for Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and Government General Hospital.

About Rs.100 crore has been allocated in the budget for the construction of a 30-km-long road connecting Vandalur, Nazarethpet and Nemilicheri as part of the first phase of the Outer Ring Road project. The project worth Rs. 858 crore aims to decongest the traffic and develop suburban areas.
