BHUBANESWAR: Gyan Patnaik, mother of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, passed away at New Delhi on Tuesday. She was 79 and had been ailing for long. Gyan Patnaik breathed her last at Ashlok Hospital, New Delhi at 1.17 am on Tuesday. Body of Gyan Patnaik, wife of legendary leader and former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, was shifted to 3, Aurangjeb Road residence. At the deathbed, elder son Prem Patnaik, Naveen Patnaik and other close relatives were present. As the news spread, Members of Parliament from Orissa rushed to Aurangjeb Road residence to pay their last respect. Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Sahu and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia also reached the place to bid adieu to the departed soul. Body of Gyan Patnaik was brought to Bhubaneswar in the evening. The body would be kept for general public for paying homage on Wednesday. Subsequently, it would be taken to Puri where cremation would take place at Swargadwar. Condoling the death of Gyan Patnaik, Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare said every Oriya shared the grief and on her passing away the whole State had lost a noble and kindhearted soul. President of Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee . P. Singh Deo said Gyan Patnaik was a noble soul indeed and exemplary human being, who had cordial relationship with his mother.
