Menon reviews progress of pacts with Nepal

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon has arrived in Kathmandu to review the progress of the joint statement signed between the Prime Ministers of India and Nepal last September.

Mr. Menon met Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) on Tuesday. They reviewed the progress made regarding the agreements made by the two countries during Mr. Prachanda’s visit to India.

Briefing reporters, Mr. Prachanda’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Hira Bahadur Thapa said, “It should be taken as an assessment visit — reviewing Prime Minister Mr. Prachanda’s visit to India and Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Nepal.”

According to Thapa, Mr. Prachanda enquired about the 240-MW Naumure project, which has been promised to Nepal ‘as a goodwill gesture’ by India, and also the restoration of the transmission lines, destroyed by the Kosi floods. He said India was positive on implementing all the agreements.
