TIRUCHI: NCC cadets, who excel in events like shooting, parajumping, mountaineering etc., are second to none in taking up social responsibilities.

A group of NCC cadets of D. G. Vaishnav College in Chennai have embarked on a State motorcycle expedition to create awareness among people, particularly villagers, of ‘tuberculosis’ and the ways to prevent it.

The expedition is being organised by 1(TN) Armd Sqn NCC, Madras Group ‘A’ NCC and the Tamil Nadu State Health Society – (RNTCP) Revised National Tuberculosis Programme and supported by Hero Honda and Airtel.

The expedition led by Lt. S. Santhosh Baboo, Troop Commander of the 1 (TN) Armd Sqn NCC, was flagged-off from Chennai on February 16 and have covered Puducherry, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Thanjavur districts so far.

The team, which arrived in the city on Tuesday evening, was received by the officers of the 2 (TN) Armd Sqn NCC and the District TB Control Society.

En route, the cadets distributed pamphlets brought out by the State Health Society on prevention of TB, cure, medication regime and the role of the State Government in its eradication.

They explained that tuberculosis was curable and the State Government was providing treatment through directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) . They also performed skits at important junctions, explaining the same.

The expedition was planned to create awareness about TB among the common people, Lt. Baboo said.

Apart from 16 NCC cadets, the expedition team consisted of a couple of visual communication students of the college and two Army junior commissioned officers. The team will visit Madurai, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Uthagamandalam and Vellore districts before returning to Chennai on March 3.
