Health Minister M.R.K. Paneerselvam and Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan at the inauguration of the nephrology department at the ESI Hospital, Ayanavaram, on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: Labour Minister T. M. Anbarasan on Tuesday announced that the State government has sent a proposal to the Centre to start medical colleges at Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) hospitals at K.K. Nagar and Ayanavaram.

He was speaking at the opening of the Nephrology Department at the ESI Hospital in Ayanavaram.

Pointing out that the facility in Ayanavaram was one of the oldest hospitals in the city, the Minister said its patronage had dropped after closure of the Binny Mills. He assured the doctors that the Labour Department would not be found wanting in providing the best medical facilities for those enrolled under the ESI scheme.

Health Minister M. R. K. Paneerselvam, who inaugurated a dialysis unit at the hospital, said the unit purchased at a cost of Rs.15 lakh would be of immense help to those enrolled under the ESI scheme. In the absence of the unit, those in need of dialysis were being referred to private hospitals.

Purasawalkam MLA V.S. Babu requested the Health Minister to extend the use of the dialysis unit for people not covered by ESI scheme. Labour and Employment Department principal secretary T. Prabhakara Rao spoke.
