‘LITTLE’ SUPPORT: A school student joining the human chain along with MDMK general secretary Vaiko at Tiruchi on Tuesday. — TIRUCHI: Cadres of various parties and members of Tamil organisations under the banner ‘Ilangai Tamizhar Paadhukaapu Iyakkam’ formed a human chain in the city on Tuesday to condemn the “genocide” of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka and demanding the Centre to take steps to protect them. Members of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Communist Party of India (CPI), Pattali Makkal Katchi, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and those of Tamil organisations joined hands to form the human chain, which was led by MDMK general secretary Vaiko. Starting from Anna Statue at Chinthamani, the members assembled at various places in the city and formed the human chain during which they raised slogans condemning the attacks on ethnic Tamils by the Lankan Army. Speaking to the media, Mr. Vaiko said the Sri Lankan government was perpetuating its attacks to liquidate Tamils. India, he alleged, had been providing weapons and logistical support to the Lankan government. He further charged that the Union Government had conspired with Lanka to eliminate the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and was not bothered about the elimination of Tamils. He said the Union Government had not uttered a single word about ceasefire. He claimed that the people of Tamil Nadu had understood the “fraudulent drama” of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on the issue. Among those who took part in the human chain include the MDMK city secretary A. Malarmannan, rural district secretary Natarajan, CPI district secretary Indrajith and Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam district president S.T. Rajendran.
