MALAPPURAM: The Al Shifa College of Pharmacy at Perinthalmanna will organise a day-long national symposium on ‘Pharm D. education’ on Saturday. The symposium is aimed at creating awareness among those working in the pharmacy sector about the Pharm D. degree, which is expected to revolutionise pharmacy education in the country, according to P. Unneen, managing trustee of the Shifa Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS). Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi will inaugurate the symposium at the Al Shifa Hospital Academic Hall. James D. Scott, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, California, will handle the morning session. Guru Prasad Mohanta, Pharmacy Professor, Annamalai University; and K.G. Revikumar, Principal of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi; will present papers in the afternoon. According to the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), the introduction of the Pharm D. course would take the country’s pharmacy education to global standards. The six-year Pharm D. will be equivalent to the courses offered by most western universities, a PCI press release said. The course was sanctioned in 24 colleges in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
