Legal Aid Centre comes to the rescue of student

D. Radhakrishnan

Udhagamandalam: Disappointment for R. Supriya, daughter of a farmer Ravi of Dhabbacombai village near Kotagiri, has given way to elation, thanks to the helping hand extended by the Kotagiri Taluk Legal Aid Centre.

Studying in the tenth standard of a private school at Kotagiri, Supriya was getting ready to appear for the Board examinations. However, the management decided not to send here on the grounds that the girl, who suffered from epileptic seizures, was not well equipped to write the exam. With efforts to convince the management going in vain, Mr. Ravi approached the Chairman of the Legal Aid Centre, Mohamed Ziavudin, on Tuesday.

Treating it as a violation of fundamental rights, Mr. Ziavudin formed a four-member lawyers’ commission headed by Special Government Pleader I. Manikumar to explore the possibility of making the management re-consider its decision.

The Principal, Heather R Laxon, was asked to appear before the commission on Thursday.

After mediation, Ms. Laxon agreed to arrange for an authorisation for Supriya to enter the exam centre. Later speaking to ‘The Hindu’, Mr. Ziavudin said that the Legal Aid Centre rendered a variety of services. Lamenting that not many were aware of it, he said that it was a forum where disputes could be settled quickly and justice rendered without delay.
