Kaia Kanepi’s fine run at Dubai continues

PURPLE PATCH: Kaia Kanepi rode her good form to get past Elena Vesnina in the quarterfinals, a day after scoring the biggest scalp of her career beating Jelena Jankovic.

DUBAI: Estonian Kaia Kanepimoved into the semifinals of the Dubai Open on Thursday, beating Elena Vesnina 6-3, 7-5.

On Wednesday, Serena Williams reached the quarterfinals. The World No. 1 from the United States won 6-4, 6-2 against Zheng Jie, the Wimbledon semifinalist from China, seven hours after her elder sister Venus Williams also reached the last eight.

In the doubles event, Sania Mirza and Mara Santangelo lost 3-6, 3-6 to the top-seeded pair of Zimbabwean Cara Black and American Liezel Huber.

Hewitt beats Blake

Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt upset third-seeded James Blake of the United States 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the RMK championship at Memphis on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Andy Roddick beat Steve Darcis of Belgium 7-6(1), 6-2, in the day’s last match.
