NAGAPATTINAM: The much awaited passenger train service on the newly laid BG track in the Tiruvarur–Nagore section would be inaugurated on February 27 by Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu at Tiruvarur junction, said A. K. S. Vijayan, Nagapattinam MP. During the inspection of the railway line between Nagore and Nagapattinam last week, Southern Railway General Manager Mr. Rakesh Chopra had said that the track was being set right at a curve between Nagapattinam and Nagore, as suggested by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, and passenger train services would be introduced on this section as early as possible. With the inauguration of the Tiruvarur-Nagore BG line, the Nagore-Tiruvarur-Thanjavur-Tiruchi conversion project is completed. Now, it will be easy for tourists and devotees to visit several pilgrim centres, including Velankanni Church, Nagore Dargah, Tirunallar and Sikkal and tourist spots like Tarangampadi and Point Calimere in and around Nagapattinam. Nagore will still not have a direct rail link from Chennai as Mayiladuturai-Tiruvarur section remains metre gauge. The Railways last year announced the extension of the Bangalore–Salem passenger train to Nagore after the completion of the BG conversion work. In the interim budget, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav announced the extension of the Ernakulam–Tiruchi Express to Nagore.
