BANGALORE: Bangalore city witnessed 255 murders, 90 robberies and 700 incidents of waylaying in the last calendar year — from January 1 to December 31, 2008. This was disclosed by Home Minister V. S. Acharya in his written reply to an unstarred question by MLC Marithibbe Gowda. Of these, the police had cracked 203 cases of murder, 72 robberies and 317 cases of waylaying. To prevent such incidents, the police had identified crime-prone areas and increased surveillance there. The police were also checking persons moving around suspiciously and were trying to create awareness about safety issues among women and senior citizens. Surveillance by squads such as “Hoysala” and “Cheetah” was being intensified while pictures of criminals had been displayed prominently in public places such as shopping malls, bus stands and railway stations. The Government was also considering recruiting more personnel to the Bangalore city police wing. While replying to Y.A. Narayanaswamy during Question Hour in the Legislative Council, Dr. Acharya noted that 28 murders had taken place in Bangalore city in about one-and-a-half months till February 17. Of these, police had cracked 22 cases. Anti-social elements in the city were under watch, he said and maintained that there were no serial murders in the city in the last two months. He also claimed that the crime rate had not increased in the city.
