Notices served on 1,148 nursing homes

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on Thursday informed the Lok Adalat that it had served notices to 1,148 nursing homes in Bangalore Urban and Rural districts asking them to install liquid waste treatment plants.

It said six hospitals in Bangalore — Dr. Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital at K.G. Halli, Chinmaya Mission Hospital at Indiranagar, HAL Hospital at Vimanapura, St. Martha’s Hospital at Nruputunga Road, ESI Hospital at Indiranagar and Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) — had been served notices on February 11, 2009 for closure. These hospitals would have to close down by February 25.

The KSPCB had on December 29, 2008, held meetings with representatives of 14 Government hospitals and with officials of the Department of Health and Family Welfare on providing technology to set up treatment plants.

The Lok Adalat Bench of Justice K.L. Manjunath and member Yellappa Reddy asked the KSPCB to issue notices to hospitals and give them time to comply only as per the provisions of the Act.

Some of the hospitals which were ordered to be closed told the adalat that they had already taken steps to comply with its orders on setting up treatment plants. The adalat said they would have to file an application and also move the KSPCB for further orders as it was the board that had issued closure orders.

The Lok Adalat took exception to the absence of officials of the Bruhut Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). It wanted to know the status of desilting of storm water drains carried out by the palike. The Lok Adalat adjourned further hearing of the case to March 14.
