Major traffic disruptions in Kolkata

Marcus Dam

KOLKATA: Traffic movement in the city was severely disrupted for at least an hour on Thursday because of roadblocks and processions taken out by supporters and leaders of the Trinamool Congress.

The Trinamool Congress leadership is demanding the dismissal of the Left Front government that it has accused of “State terrorism.”

School buses stopped

Buses carrying schoolchildren were among vehicles that were forced to a halt as Trinamool Congress supporters staged roadside meetings and some squatted on at intersections of major roads in the city.

The agitation extended its scheduled period – between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. – in certain areas. Roadblocks were also set up on the busy Howrah Bridge.

Highways blocked

There were reports of similar obstructions on roads including national and State highways in some districts and towns across the State.
