Kanepi’s fine run continues, meets Razzano next

IN LAST FOUR: France’s Virginie Razzano put out Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Open on Thursday.

DUBAI: Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, who had put out Jelena Jankovic on Wednesday, moved into the semifinals of the Dubai Open on Thursday, beating Elena Vesnina 6-3, 7-5.

She was later joined by Venus Williams and Virginie Razzano of France. While Razzano defeated fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva 7-6(7), 7-5 to set up a last four meeting with Kanepi, sixth-seeded Venus accounted for fourth seed Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-3.

In the doubles event, Sania Mirza and Mara Santangelo lost 3-6, 3-6 to the top-seeded pair of Zimbabwean Cara Black and American Liezel Huber.

Hewitt beats Blake

Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt upset third-seeded James Blake of the United States 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the RMK championship at Memphis on Wednesday.
