THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A live demonstration of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is turning out to be the biggest crowd-puller at the second edition of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) mela in the city which commenced at the LMS ground here on Thursday. Apart from introducing visitors to its new digital broadband-based service, the IPTV demonstration is also part of BSNL Kerala circle’s efforts to evaluate the market possibility of IPTV in the State. IPTV is a system where a digital television service is delivered using Internet protocol over a network infrastructure, like broadband connection. In other words, IPTV is television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional cable or Direct To Home (DTH) formats, is received by the viewer through the technologies used for computer networks. With IPTV, BSNL is now foraying into the field of broadcast entertainment from communication. “IPTV is more of a television experience rather than a computer experience. The biggest advantage of IPTV is that it is a multi-play technology which enables users to access telephone, Internet and television content at the same time using a single broadband connection,” a BSNL official said. All you need is a set-top-box, called Smart Electronics Device (SED), and a broadband connection. Since IPTV delivers TV channels in digital format, the quality of TV viewing is much better as compared to the analog transmission. The Kerala circle of BSNL will enter into a business tie-up with a content provider for delivering television content through its network. “Right now we have tied up with a Gurgaon-based content provider for the trial run. There are a few more technical issues to be sorted out before we could commercially launch our IPTV service in Kerala,” said K.S. Sreenivasan, Chief General Manager, Kerala circle.
